Something I love, something I cannot imagine not having time for is personal growth. It is because of the time I have invested in it that I am still able to do what I am doing. As we go through our daily lives, we often forget to take some time off and focus on ourselves. Who are you? What do you believe in? What do you stand for?
I now know what it feels like to know yourself. I can predict when I am about to fall into addiction and prevent myself, I know the symptoms of burnout and how to deal with it and I make an effort to become better daily. All this is because of investing in personal growth.
Every moment of one’s existence, one is growing into more or retreating into less.Norman Mailer
What is personal growth?
For me, personal growth is a journey. In my opinion, it does not have an end for as long as you are alive. Wikipedia defines personal growth as activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potentials, enhance the quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.
In addition, personal growth is a choice. You as an individual commit to a journey of self-discovery and setting expectations for yourself. I find this very fulfilling and sometimes very annoying. When I set goals for myself and I accomplish them I feel amazing but if I do not accomplish them – well it takes me time to get over it because of my personality.
The journey to knowing yourself can be scary. What if you discover you are not who you thought you are? On the other hand, what if you discover that you are more than you ever thought? Geez, that is confusing! This is a risk that is worth taking and I don’t know if I can convince you but let me give you what I have gained so far in this journey.
Why personal growth?
Let me first start by saying as fun as this journey may seem you can somehow feel like you are a wreck. I tend to feel like for me personal growth was normal and I just found myself in it because of the little hurdles I faced in life.
When I was a teen, I went through so many phases and I really had to learn to deal with myself. I noticed that I would react differently to certain things and that I was more aware of myself. Sometimes I would feel so sad that all I could do was write an inspiring letter to myself. That was my therapy – telling myself that regardless of where I was and whatever situation I will still make it.
My teachers as well always told us to imagine where our lives would be 10 years from then and to me that looked strange. At that time, thinking about 10 years to come was absurd not to mention that I am probably 2 years away from that now. I never bothered to think about 10 years; I was interested in the next year. Would my life be better? Will I have accomplished what I came here to do? My goals were to complete school with good grades and each year drew me closer to my dream so I was GOOD.
Personal development is the belief that you are worth the effort, time and energy needed to develop yourself.Denis Waitley
With time, I began encouraging fellow students and helping them overcome a few challenges and that would make me feel great. I felt I knew myself and I could help others also learn to know themselves and accept themselves. I was only able to do it for others because I had done it for myself and I knew that there were major benefits in knowing yourself and continually improving your life.
The Benefits of Personal Growth
If I could write all the benefits of self growth, the post would be too long and possibly never end because I keep remembering something as I approach the end. Because of that, I chose to write those that I felt are important and that would motivate you to embrace the journey.
1. You get to know yourself.
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.Lao Tzu
Do you usually have a feeling that if you know something you can manage it better? Imagine how good it would be for yourself to know that you react this way because of a certain condition or situation.
Whenever I see myself spending more than one hour on social media just liking people’s pictures and having wishful thoughts; I know it is time to take a break from social media. If I don’t take the break, I will end up feeling like I hate my life and hating myself. The best is always to take the break before the damage occurs.
I find it easier to avoid traps and addictions when I know myself. When you know yourself you will be able to see trouble coming and evade it. This can only be done if you embrace personal growth.
2. You have a plan for yourself.
The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.Ralph Waldo Emerson
Not having a plan is planning to fail. That genius saying means a lot! The question is where and whom do you want to be in the next 1, 5 and 10 years and what do you need to do to get there. Start there.
Personal growth helps you identify what your priorities in life are and sometimes help you see why particular things should be a priority in your life. I can’t imagine what my life would be if I did not know what I should be doing in order to get the dream life that I hope for.
Sometimes I fear that I ‘over-dream’ about my future. It is the only time I imagine to be this dream self and living my dream life. The truth, however, is that with self-growth in mind, you will always aspire to dream more.
3. You live a purposeful life.
Finding your purpose in life is a life-long commitment and therefore it is not as easy. I feel like my purpose changes in every stage in my life but is it supposed to? As much as it changes, the theme is more or less the same.
A man’s true delight is to do the things he was made for.Marcus Aurelius
There is joy that comes from seeing yourself grow and transition from that person you used to be to who you are now. Living a purposeful life involves being present and also aware that there is a future to dream for. Purpose is what you wish to accomplish with your life. The best way to know and live for your purpose is to develop yourself.
Caring about yourself and ensuring that each milestone matters to you also contributes to living a purposeful life. Even as you search for your true purpose, you are sure that you did not waste any minute of your life.
4. You embrace yourself exactly as you are
Part of self-development is learning to first accept who you are. Many things affect who you are; where you were brought up, the conditions you grew up in and so much more! There are things we can change and there are those we cannot. Self-improvement helps us know how to change what we can and accept those which we can’t.
5. You don’t give up easily.
Be patient with yourself. Self-growth is tender; it’s holy ground. There’s no greater investment.Stephen Covey
One promise I made to myself is that I will never give up on myself. It is very easy to throw in the towel and say that I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. What my personal growth journey has taught me is to keep improving myself daily. I also learned to set small achievable goals so that I can get motivated and one day be able to set large goals and follow through with them.
When you are constantly seeking to become better and improve yourself; you learn to persevere and not give up easily. Somehow, you learn to stay motivated and uplifted. That doesn’t mean that sometimes you won’t feel low and sad, it just means that even if you do, you will get yourself out of it.
6. You always have something to hope for.
You have to begin to tell the story of your life as you now want it to be and discontinue the tales of how it has been or of how it is.Esther and Jerry Hicks
Personal growth has taught me to imagine without limits. I always ask myself what I would be if I had everything I wanted? What if money was not an issue? These questions take me to an unimaginable space where I have limitless thoughts and imagine what my life would be.
I am also sure that when I get there, I will have other dreams that will keep me motivated and aspiring to work hard. Knowing the reason I wake up every morning and being motivated by my dreams always gives me something to hope for.
7. You become the best person you can be.
Who wouldn’t want to be the best version of themselves? It is not possible to be perfect and that is a lesson I learned very recently! However, you can always be better. How?
Growing your strengths and working on your weaknesses. The best way to know what you are good at and bad at is by embracing personal growth. I find it exciting when I discover something new about myself. I always want to dig deep and explore my personality. In addition to helping me be self-aware, I also learn how I can improve myself.
The main goal of self-growth is to become the best person you could possibly be and this is the benefit you get when you choose personal growth.
I have really enjoyed the benefits that come with the journey of personal growth. It has helped me get unstuck from where I was a few months ago. It feels great to know that you can make a difference for yourself and the world as well.
I believe that each and every person has that ability to make the world a better place only if they knew themselves a little better and tried to become better daily. Stop wasting your life wishing and regretting or longing to be somebody else. Embrace personal growth and focus on yourself and you will see just how great you can be.
Congratulations for making it this far! I would have made the post shorter but it would have lost taste. However, I hope that I have motivated you to embrace the journey of personal growth. I am not an expert in it but I have practiced it for so long it’s in my blood. Anyway, remember to join the fam by subscribing below.
