Procrastination is the one thing I truly hated and still hate so much. I hate when people say that they will do something and never do it. I did not want to hate myself so I had to find a way of not procrastinating. First, procrastination makes your life so hard. You’ve planned out your day so well then when it’s time to do something, the show becomes too interesting to leave the couch. All of a sudden, you do not have the psyche and energy to accomplish a task. You end up saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I’ll do it later” or better yet “immediately this ends I’ll do it”. The question is how do you just get things done? This is how I do it.
Procrastination makes easy things hard, hard things harder. ~ Mason Cooley.
As I was watching some videos on YouTube; I came across something very strange. It was so strange that I first decided to try it before even telling anybody about. When it worked, I could not believe it. I stopped snoozing alarms, I managed to get up early every day and I stopped postponing my to-do list.
The strange idea is called ‘The 5 Second Rule’. For all my food lovers, it has nothing to do with ‘germs are not aware’. What the idea generally states is that you always have a 5-second window before making a decision. If in those 5 seconds you have not made up your mind, chances are very high that you will not do whatever it is you were to do. It further states that counting 5 to 1 i.e. ‘5 – 4 – 3 – 2- 1’ helps you get up and do something.
To think too long about doing a thing often becomes its undoing. ~ Eva Young.
I like adventure so I had to try this one out, furthermore what I would I lose? The first day, when the alarm went off; as usual very lazy to get up, I switched off the alarm and started thinking if I should wake up that early. I quickly remembered I wanted to try something out. I counted 5 to 1 and somehow I felt the energy to wake up. After my morning devotion, I jumped out of bed quite energetic.
As I went through my daily activities throughout the week, I realized the ‘rule’ actually works. That whole week, I did not procrastinate on anything. Once it was time to do something, I had the energy to do it. From that week till today, procrastination and I have never been friends.
If you want to do away with procrastination, you need to try the idea but only if you are dedicated and ready to stop procrastination. Try it out with a winning mentality; that you will try your best whenever possible to make a decision in 5 seconds and if you are indecisive count 5 to 1 and just get up and do the stuff.
There is a lot to read about the 5 Second Rule. Here, I have summarised a little on how it will help you stop procrastinating. It’s a process of training your mind and it will last forever. You will rarely have the urge to postpone things unless it is necessary. Give it a try!
Doing things in time and when they should be done feels more than amazing. The joy of having an all-done to-do list for the day is good. Piling up tasks makes you frustrated, angry and lazier. The time to make the difference is now. You need to make the decision to start in the next 5 seconds otherwise this will just be like any other article you have read on how to stop procrastination. Watch this and make the decision now!
I would really love to hear whether the rule worked for you. Leave a comment below.
