The Trick on How to Set Goals and Accomplish Them

From the time we were young, we were always told to set goals. Whether it was writing down targets or matching up to our parent’s standards (keeping your room neat); these goals were and still remain important. When we set goals, we give ourselves a chance to become better individuals. Successful people set goals and have a clear plan on how they will accomplish them and stay on track.

I consider setting goals a big part of success. All the successful people I have ever met had a dream, set goals that would help them realize their dream, stayed on track and now they are reaping greatly from what was once a dream. We too can become successful by setting goals and ensuring we stay on track. In this post, I will focus on identifying certain areas in our lives that need goals, how to define our goals, watching our goals, creating a plan, and how we can stay on track.

About two months ago, I was in need of changing my morning routine to become healthier. I came across an amazing App: The Fabulous App*. This app helped me totally change my morning routine. I am so happy because I adopted a healthier routine which helped me have a more energetic day. The app sets for you some goals for example drink water every morning, then reminds you to take water after you wake up. The app has messages per activity that help you ensure that you accomplish the goal and stay on track.

*Not an ad. I do not benefit in any way from you downloading the app.

I learnt a lot from the app and have been able to set goals in other areas of my life that I am slowly accomplishing. I would highly recommend the app (not an ad), you will not regret using it especially if you are in need to changing up some routines.

Going through that experience, I learned a lot when it comes to how to set goals and specifically how to ensure you stay on track.

Purpose of setting goals

I always start with the why. Why do we need to set goals? There are 4 main reasons that justify why you need to set goals.

1. Improve your life

One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.

Michael Korda

Nobody is perfect but we need to chase perfection. There are aspects of our lives that can be made better and that is why we need to set goals. Your life becomes better when you work to make yourself the best version of yourself. Without goals (a vision), you will remain at the same position in your life.

2. Happy Life

Doesn’t it feel incredible to know that each day you are working towards something good that will make you a better person? Needless to say, your happiest moment is when you get something you had always wished to have.

Setting goals and accomplishing them brings a lot of happiness to your life. When you learn to set goals and stay on track, nobody can tell you that you cannot make it because you have already proved to yourself that you can make it.

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

Tony Robbins

3. Success

People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going.

Earl Nightingale

If you really want to succeed, you must start setting goals and be determined to accomplish them. When you are the best version of yourself and trying to become better, success is inevitable. What is success anyway? This is a topic for another day!

But generally, whatever you have defined personal success as, is what you will get when setting goals becomes a habit.

4. Purposeful life

Goals give us purpose, which, in turn, motivates us to make ourselves the best version in all aspects of your life.

Hannah Bronfman

Goals give your life a purpose. We all want to live a life where everybody looks up to us and learns something new.

Everyone has a purpose in life and a unique talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.

How to Set Goals

Before we look into how to set goals, we will discuss a little on the areas of your life you can focus on when setting goals.

  1. Personal Goals: These focus on you as an individual. What habits do you want to form? Which weaknesses do you want to work on? Where do you want to be in a few years time?
  2. Financial Goals: Do you have any debts you want to pay off? Are you planning to take a loan or mortgage any time soon? Do not neglect the fact that you need to organize yourself financially.
  3. Career Goals: What do you love doing? Are you making enough money from it? Is there anything you can do to advance your knowledge and skill set? These are very important goals too.
  4. Relationship Goals: I have dedicated a whole post to relationship goals. It is coming soon!

Defining A Goal

Set realistic goals, keep re-evaluating, and be consistent.

Venus Williams

We have all heard that we need to set SMART goals that is, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. So whenever you are setting your goals, you have to think about all those factors. A factor I would like to emphasize on is Realistic. If you want to stay motivated and realize your goals, you have to be very realistic.

Don’t rush things in life. Take a step a time. If you just started working, you cannot expect to be promoted to a manager in one month (well, unless . . .). There is a difference between goals and dreams. Have you read on the reason why you should start to dream big now?

Dreams are not bound by time but goals are. You could dream to own a large profitable company but set a goal to begin research into the company’s details and start the company by end of year.

An example of a SMART goal is to pay all my debts by the end of the year. Also, state the debt amount.

When you define a goal, make sure to indicate what you will gain from achieving that goal. An example is that when I pay my debt, I will be debt-free and that means I can start saving up for my next big project. This will make me happy because that has been my dream.

This is important because it helps you stay on track!

Stay on Track

Goals allow you to control the direction of change in your favor.

Brian Tracy

1. Define smaller tasks

After you have defined your goal, you need to define what you need to do in order to achieve the goal. If I want to pay out all my debt, then I need to get x amount of money by the end of the year. This means that I need to save x amount of money. For me to save x amount of money, I need to start using public transport so that I save on fuel costs.

That was just an example. What I did is that I broke down the goal to something I can do daily. As I start each day, I know that I have a particular task to accomplish. You have to remind yourself why you are doing it. This is where what you are gaining from achieving the goal comes in. It reminds you of the bigger picture.

Knowing what you will gain will help you remember the main reason you set out that goal. That is what you should work towards.

Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.

Les Brown

Breaking down your goals into small achievable goals motivates you. This is why I don’t advice you to have more than 12 major goals in a year. Some goals are continuous so they can stretch for more than a month. For a habit to become routine you have to repeat it often. This means that some months may have more than one goal to be worked on.

Break down the major goals into minor goals. The minor goals should build up to the end result eventually. From these minor goals, identify tasks you can do daily. This way, you can track your progress and will not lose psyche easily.

2. Enable yourself

For you to accomplish a task you must put yourself in the right position. For example, if you chose to use public transport to save on costs, then you can give your car keys to someone you trust and tell them they can only give you the keys during weekends or if you have an emergency.

This way you have evaded temptations. With time, you will become self disciplined and manage to stand strong against temptations.

3. Stay motivated

Ensure that you always have the end in mind. Stay focused. If you follow @mielesfam on Pinterest and Instagram, they try their best to give daily inspirational quotes.

Set goals and accomplish them!

Celebrate and reward yourself

You deserve a reward if you set a goal and achieve it. One thing I learned from the Fabulous App is that each time you finish doing a task, you should celebrate. It could be a happy dance or telling yourself congratulations. You could also buy yourself something. By all means, you do deserve it. Not very many people make it through to achieve their goals.

Bonus

Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life.

Les Brown

The bonus I have for you is to stay committed. To help stay committed, I have added something new in our Free Goodies to help you set and track your goals. You can download it and use it for all your goals. It is what I will personally be using so let’s start this journey together.

To get access to Free Goodies, all you have to do is subscribe to our Newsletter and you will be given an access code.

In one of the videos from the best Ted Talks under 5 minutes, there was one video where we advised not to share our goals! I do not share my goals unless it is someone I really trust and I know that they can help me. Some people prefer to share their goals which is good but it does not work for everyone. Try both and see what works for you.

Finally,

I am not perfect and nobody can be perfect. However, I think there is happiness in unlocking our best selves. The first step is to set goals. You can never go wrong working on making yourself a better person.

That is the little (and much) I had for you when it comes to how to set goals. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments and tell me if your life has changed since you started setting goals.
