I am always disappointed whenever I see people not being true to themselves. Life is in such a way that you are meant to be yourself. Why go through the stress and struggles wishing to be somebody else or trying to mirror someone’s life. The only thing you do is denying yourself happiness and freedom. So how can you be yourself? What does it even mean to be yourself? Does being yourself really make you happy?
There are very many things we do not know about the people we wish to be. That one person you wish to be is going through fights you do not know. Fights that if you were given you probably wouldn’t manage. For the successful person to be where they are, he/she must have gone very tough times. Nevertheless, he/she chose to fight on. Longing to be somebody else yet you do not know their struggle does not make sense.
People have gone to extremes of bleaching their skin because they feel God made a mistake to give them that skin color. We have become so influenced by society and trends that it has become difficult to live a normal life. Each time, we are questioning; do I look good, what will they say, I’m I too dark? We have seen celebrities do crazy things to get where they are and we think that by imitating their lives we will also make it in life? All we are doing is making the world unlivable. If we all chose to be ourselves; the world would be balanced.
What is to ‘be yourself’?
It means living a life that is unique to you. It means doing something because you have chosen to do it and not because somebody else is doing it. It also means standing your ground on what you believe. When you look at your life are you being yourself and staying true to yourself?
When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everyone will respect you. ~ Lao Tzu,
As you grow up, your decisions begin to make an impact in your life. Choices have consequences, and even if the consequences do not appear now they will come sometime in the near future and you will be alive to experience it all. One of the things I tell myself daily is that I can never do something because I have seen somebody do it unless it is going to bring a positive impact in my life.
Each time I realize that making decisions that will improve my life takes a lot of courage and mental willpower. On the other hand, quick fix decisions are the easiest. Take a look at betting; you will bet because your friend won some money. You will become miserable after you realize you are not going to win. If you made the decision to bet, you should be sane enough to know when it has become an addiction and stop, but if you were doing it for your friends you may as well bet your money away.
To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
One thing we need to drill in our heads is that we all have different dreams, ambitions, and goals in life. Everyone’s definition of success is different. For one, success is having a real estate firm and for another, the dream is to build his house. If you start trying to imitate the latter’s life yet that is not your dream; are you not ruining your life? Even if the dreams are the same; his ways of achieving his dream will be totally different from yours. Learn from role models but do not imitate their life.
Take things at your pace and enjoy the tides of life. It is easy to be swayed by others and we backslide sometimes. At the end of it all, do not let anybody define you.
Be yourself, everyone else is already taken. ~ Oscar Wilde
Being yourself starts with accepting and knowing yourself. Who are you? What do you love? What truly makes you happy? What do you believe in? Do you believe in yourself? Your life does not have and will never map onto someone else’s life. If we were all the same; life would be very boring. Unlock your happiness and freedom; be yourself and choose to be yourself from today henceforth.
